Robert F. and Robert H. Kauffman have the good fortune to have been born with the gift of having an artist's "eye". When they "look" at an object as every one does, they "see" the same object in a different way. This innate ability allows creative individuals to explore various other aspects of common objects. This unique skill coupled with curiosity and a creative mind allows artists to explore the many variations of something as simple as a leaf.

Is it symmetrical ? Do the veins create a pattern? Is the texture smooth or rough? Does it have an even continuous contour or is the edge jagged or irregular? What about color? Is it the same on the entire surface or does or does it vary in intensity and value? Is there a sense of visual balance? Does the eye wander about the shape looking for a focal point or some kind of rhythm or repetition? Is there a shape within a shape, (perhaps a hole made by an insect or disease ) which makes it appear different than the rest of the leaf shape.

Difference creates contrast and contrast in turn can create visual interest or emphasis. All of these factors play an important role in influencing the mind of the artist. Within moments and almost unconsciously, the artist's creative mind when spotting an interesting object will begin to explore and visually experiment the almost endless possibilities of something as simple as a leaf. The artist's "eye" will not only "look" at the leaf, but actually "see" the endless possibilities within the leaf itself.
